Capstone: 3D Suitability Analysis for a Solar Powered Flood Shelter in Cambridge, Massachusetts

I conducted my capstone project using data from the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts’ GIS Database, which was incredibly extensive. The goal of my capstone was to pinpoint the 3 best locations for a solar powered flood shelter in Cambridge. First I had to conduct a suitability analysis to analyze suitable locations. The analysis included elevation, demographics, and surrounding resources. Next, I had to use complex 3D GIS Analysis tools to analyze where the sun was most prominent and when. I coupled these analysis and analyzed the results. Feel free to look at my findings in the PowerPoint below:

Research Assistantship: UAV Mapping and Onondaga Creek

It all began when I purchased my drone. I actually promised my mom I’d use it both for recreational AND academic purposes. I approached my professor one day and said something along the lines of “Hey! I’ve got this flying machine and I want to use it to conduct research on use cases for GIS applications”. My conversation translated into a year-long effort to map a local creek with my Drone. We were most concerned with the depth and flow-velocity of the creek itself. Research came to a halt when my drone fell from the sky.

Syracuse University | Minor in Public Communications, Newhouse School

The Minor

The minor itself was incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to have a taste of what a typical Newhouse student. Newhouse is known as one of the best communication schools in the nation. Initially, my goal was to be a Newhouse Grad. When I made the transition to geography my sophomore year, I didn’t want to leave Newhouse completely. I compensated with a minor in Public Communications. Several rewarding classes included:

  • Communications Law

  • Global Advertising

  • Visual Issues in the Media
